Alleged money laundering: Court gives Ndume ultimatum to produce Maina

By Eric Ikhilae, Abuja

Senator Ali Ndume (Borno South) is at the risk of sanction by the Federal High Court Abuja should he fail to produce ex-Chairman, Pension Reformed Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, on Monday.

Ndume had stood surety for Maina when the court granted him bail on the condition that he would always attend court with him pending the conclusion of the case or forfeit the N500 million bail bond.

Maina is facing trial at the court for money laundering related offences.

The accused was absent in court yesterday when the matter was mentioned.

But Ndume was in court.

Maina’s lawyer, Francis Oronsaye, told the court that his client was on admission at the Maitama General Hospital and prayed the court for an adjournment.

Lead prosecution lawyer, Farouk Abdullah objected, and faulted Oronsaye’s claim that Maina was on admission in the hospital.

Abdullah said on Friday was the third time Maina would be absent in court without cogent reasons.

He noted that Maina was absent on September 29, 2020, following which the court adjourned till September 30, on which date he also failed to attend court before the case was fixed for October 2.

“My lord, staff of the prosecution establishment visited General Hospital Maitama and interviewed the Chief Medical Director and other staff.

“We discovered that the 1st defendant is not a patient of the hospital,” Abdullah said.

The prosecution lawyer said he has filed an affidavit to that effect and urged the court to take judicial notice of the events, which showed that Maina had jumped bail.

“In view of this, we pray the court to so hold and to issue a warrant of arrest against the 1st defendant,” he said.

Abdullah urged the court to issue a summons on Ndume to show course why he should not forfeit the bail bond and be remanded in a correctional facility since the lawmaker entered into recognisance before the court to always produce Maina to stand the trial.
